Application of the Epidemiological Algorithm to recently HIV infected persons (AERI-HIV)
During the year 2003, the “Marató de TV3” Foundation awarded the CEEISCAT a grant -through public summons- for the development of the AERI-HIV project for research on AIDS by applying the STARHS technique. In 1998 a new diagnostic algorithm was described, the Serological Testing Algorithm for Recent HIV Seroconversion (STARHS) to detect recent HIV-1 infections, allowing to estimate the incidence of the HIV infection in cross-sectional studies (Janssen at al, 1998). Since 2002, the CEEISCAT participates in a quality control program for one of these tests, allowing a direct access to the application phase.
The general objective of this project is to describe the frequency and epidemiological characteristics of the recently HIV infected persons in our setting.
Since the beginning, this multicenter project was included into the Public Health and Epidemiology Research Line from the Spanish AIDS Research Network (RIS) del FIS-Ministry of Health (Groups network number 173).
