Institutional Activities HIV/AIDS Morbidity Monitoring

 MONITORING HIV PREVALENCE

Prevalence and distribution of HIV infection are estimated by monitoring of sentinel population groups which reflect the general population or of population which are at risk. The population studied and the projects in the system are heterogeneous in nature and include the following:

a) Monitoring HIV prevalence through unlinked anonymous screening.

  • 50% of newborns per year, samples coming from the Neonatal Metabolic Screening Program.

  • Annual medical tests among employees at stable industrial and service companies in Catalonia.

  • Patients diagnosed with tuberculosis, at the “Dr. Lluís Sayč” Thorax diseases Clinic.

b) Monitoring HIV prevalence through voluntary and anonymous cross-sectional studies.

  • Street-recruited IDUs.

  • MSM recruited in various venues frequented by this population.

  • Half of all voluntary termination of pregnancies carried out in Catalonia and reported from DSSS recognized centres.

c) Monitoring HIV prevalence through systematic data collection.

  • All blood donations made in Catalonia.

  • IDUs starting treatment for addiction in the Drug-dependence Attention and Follow-up centres.

  • Prison inmates.

  • Patients at a Sexually Transmitted Disease treatment centre.
