Institutional Activities - HIV/AIDS Morbidity Monitoring

 AIDS cases Registry of Catalonia

Reporting of AIDS cases has been compulsory in Catalonia since 1987. Epidemiological surveillance of AIDS is coordinated and directed through CEEISCAT with collaboration from other institutions such as Barcelona’s Municipal Health Institute, the DSSS’s Regional Delegations and the General Office of penal an rehabilitation services from Department of Justice’s. Nominal, confidential information is gathered through the health centres by means of a single standardised form.

AIDS Case definition criteria and diagnostic methods applied are as outlined in the 1982, 1985 and 1987 CDC, USA, case definitions and 1993 the European AIDS case definition. Transmission group coding is in accordance with hierarchical criteria, in which transmisión due to IDU has priority over sexual transmission.
